At last my arm is complete by SeraphimSeranade At last my arm is complete by SeraphimSeranade
Finished Steam-powered arm for my costume for ACen 2010. Way to much fun on this, It's supposed to be a ray gun/mini arm cannon bolted to a forearm piece, I'm fairly happy with it seeing as it's my first ever prop ^.^

Made out of leather, craft foam, lots of paint, a re purposed belt, copper wire, and a small metal charm.

Also, lots of glue.

That is totally awesome. What type of paint did you use to paint the craft foam? The effect is amazing.

It's actually three different layers, the first is I used Venetian gold craft paint to coat the entire thing, then I dry brushed some black over it to weather it, and then I used rub and buff metallic finishing wax in antique gold over some places to bring back a shine and make the "metal" look more beaten/worn.

Hrm...how well does the first coat of paint hold up when the craft foam is flexed. Every time I've tried painting craft foam it always ends up cracking slightly when bent.

Well, only the cannon is exposed craft foam, and it doesn't bend, the arm itself is craft foam that's been covered with upholstery leather and painted over.
